It's almost as if the sports gods don't want Philly to win a championship.

Talk about wet and wild! The World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays was suspended in the middle of Game 5 due to a virtual Nor’easter which caught weather forecasters and baseball officials off guard. The Phillies are up 3 games to 1 and could have captured the championship with a win last night. Instead, action was stopped in the middle of the 5th inning.

More rain and possible snow showers were expected Tuesday, so commissioner Bud Selig said Game 5 was tentatively set to resume at 8:37 p.m. Wednesday night. If necessary, teams will immediately jet to St. Petersburg Florida for games 6 and 7 on Thursday and Friday—no off day for travel. BTW: Tampa Bay's home is a dome so weather wouldn't be a problem in there.

It’s not as tragic as the Bay Area earthquake which interrupted the World Series between the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants in 1989. But it’s definitely an unusual event. And no matter who wins or loses now, some people are going to feel cheated. Looking ahead, the baseball season is just a bit too long now. With the expanded playoffs in recent years, the game is now played from the beginning of April until the beginning of November. There are going to be MORE instances where wintry weather impacts post season play.
